Bishop Briggs Becomes First Female to Headline ALTer EGO

Bishop Briggs performs on The Late Late Show with James Corden on April 19, 2018

"I'm the woman on this lineup!"

Bishop Briggs made alternative rock history Saturday night (Jan. 19) at iHeartRadio’s ALTer EGO at the Forum in Los Angeles by being the first female to ever headline the annual show.

The lineup brought together alternative rock’s biggest superstars for a star-studded concert that included twenty one pilots, The Killers, Weezer, Rise Against, The Revivalists, and Muse.

“I've been on the verge of tears the entire day,” Briggs tells Billboard on the red carpet before the show. “I’m just so honored to be here and it makes me so thankful that I’m on [the lineup]. I’m really just going to take it all in, I’m going to try not to cry on stage.”

But despite her efforts, the moment got the best of her.

"I'm the woman on this lineup!" Briggs cheerfully exclaimed mid-performance. "And I'm going to try not to cry … there was the Women's March today and I just want to thank iHeart and 98.7 for representing female musicians, so thank you."

The 26-year-old singer, who’s debut album Church of Scars is approaching it’s one-year release anniversary in April, opened her set with a raw rendition of “The Way I Do” followed by performances of “Hallowed Ground,” “White Flag,” “Wild Horses,” "Baby" and of course breakout hit “River."

The singer also opened up about her new hairstyle, explaining that the decision to shave her head was in support of a friend undergoing chemo.

“It felt like something I could do to raise awareness about the Susan G. Komen Foundation — which has helped her and supported her,” Briggs tells Billboard. “So it’s been exciting to be able to shave my head and talk about it.”

In addition to being on the lineup for various festivals this year, Briggs says her fans can also look forward to new music from her and new set changes.

“I think it’s important to keep it fresh,” the singer says. “I’ve been writing a lot. So I’m for sure going to make sure that there are new and different things. I’m really excited.”
